If you are planning on having oral surgery, you should be prepared before your surgery and prepared for what is going to happen after your surgery. Oral surgery may be necessary for a number of reasons. It could be something minor, such as having a few teeth pulled, or the need to have teeth cut out of the mouth, such as wisdom teeth. You may also need a root canal, dental implants inserted, or something else. Whatever your oral surgery is for, even if it's something a little more minor, if you are going to be under anesthesia, it's a big deal. Read on for some tips for both pre and post-surgery.

Pre-Surgery

Before your surgery, you should make sure you have a ride to and from your appointment. If you are going to be put under anesthesia, you aren't going to be able to drive at all. You're going to need someone to drive you because you could cause an accident if you aren't coherent enough. You should also have all of your medications needed after your surgery purchased. You should ask your surgeon about getting your prescriptions beforehand so you can get them filled, as afterward, you aren't going to want to do this running around to fill your prescriptions. You're also going to want to make sure the pharmacy you are using has the medications on hand so you don't have to wait too long to get them. Some medications such as pain medications or antibiotics are going to be necessary after your surgery.

 Post-Surgery

After your surgery, you aren't going to be feeling very well. You may need someone to help you take care of yourself and any children you have in your home. You're probably going to not feel well for a few days at least afterward. You may feel nauseous after the surgery and may experience dizziness from the anesthesia. You may also feel sore after the surgery, and most likely won't be eating solid foods for a few days. Make sure you have soft foods to eat or things to drink to fill you up, such as smoothies or even soup. Have some ginger ale on hand, which can help settle your stomach if you're nauseous.

If you are having oral surgery, use the tips above to help you before and after your surgery.
